PVD Decorative Coatings for Opalware

 

Opalware: translucent glass/ceramic tableware and lighting components are also called “opal glass” or “opalware.” As tableware is widely used in our daily life, the PVD coating technology is applied to this application.


PVD coatings features

  • Aesthetic effects: PVD can produce metallic, iridescent, pearlescent, and colored finishes (gold, bronze, titanium blues/purples, rainbow/halo effects) that are difficult or impossible with traditional glazes or spray paints.
  • Thin, uniform layers: Coatings are extremely thin (typically a few nanometers to a few microns), preserving translucency and optical qualities while adding decorative color and sheen.
  • Durability: Hard, scratch-resistant films improve surface wear, chemical resistance, and cleaning durability versus simple painted or plated finishes.

Environmental and process benefits: PVD is generally solvent-free and produces no hazardous waste compared to many wet coatings

 

 

  PVD materials and finish types are commonly used

  • Metals/alloys: Titanium (Ti), Chromium (Cr), Zirconium (Zr), Gold (Au), and alloys like TiN (titanium nitride), ZrN (zirconium nitride), CrN (chromium nitride).
  • Oxides & nitrides: Metal oxides (e.g., TiO2 variants), nitrides, and oxynitrides produce colors from gold/bronze to blue/purple and iridescent rainbow effects.
  • Multilayer/gradient coatings: Layers of different materials or controlled thickness gradients produce interference colors and pearlescent effects important for decorative opalware.
